Viewing our Veteran Yew Trees
Were you aware that St Mary the Virgin has 5 ancient yew trees in its churchyard? A solid and respectful remnant of a bygone age, but still growing fast, furiously and healthily into the 21st century. Please come and explore the churchyard, as they are magnificent.
This year, in collaboration with Love Your Yew Week 2026, a group of enthusiastic volunteers has been trimming the ground beneath the yew trees to give these ancient specimens the best support possible in 2026. This action was recommended by the association “Caring for God’s Acre”.
If you are interested in learning more about caring for Yew Trees, there is a fabulous publication titled A-Guide-to-Ancient-and-Veteran-Churchyard-Trees, published by Caring for God’s Nature, which reveals fascinating facts and figures about the trees’ history, their link to churchyards, and the medicinal benefits of their bark.
