Roof Repairs have started at St Mary’s – Autumn 2025
As many of you will have seen, scaffolding has been erected around St Mary’s Church, Micheldever. We would like to tell you what is happening…..
The roof of the chancel (built circa 1880) is covered in very large format slates which are beautiful, but extremely uneven. A recent survey showed that some of the slates have slipped out of line,
probably due to the sheer weight of the individual slates. A closer inspection with a roofing specialist revealed that the wooden battens are beginning to fail, and re-roofing is required. It is
hoped that the slates can be salvaged and re-used. Repairs are also needed to the vestry roof.
The PCC has decided that this is a good opportunity to insulate the chancel and vestry roofs to reduce energy bills and the church’s overall carbon footprint. While the scaffolding is up, the rainwater goods will be overhauled and redecorated.
This work is urgent and therefore, the PCC has decided that it must be given priority. The work will be overseen by the church architect, and it is hoped that it will be completed by Christmas.
The estimated cost of the repairs is £36,000 plus VAT. A daunting amount for a small parish church.
We have been busy fundraising and for some time we have been setting aside money into our Fabric Fund to pay for fabric repairs. Grants have been applied for and we hope for good news.
Paying for the repairs will very seriously deplete our reserves and comes at a time when we have only just paid for expensive repairs to the organ.
