St Mary's is on a mission to reach the net zero targets set by the Church of England aiming to be net zero by 2030. In April 2024 St Mary's welcomed Esos Energy consultants to complete a survey on our energy usage and areas for improvement. Because of the age of the building it was identified that our energy footprint (in particular the heating) needs to be vastly improved. As many of you will have seen, scaffolding has been erected around St Mary’s Church, Micheldever. We would like to tell you what is happening….. The roof of the chancel (built circa 1880) is covered in very large format slates which are beautiful, but extremely uneven. A recent survey showed that some of the slates have slipped out of line, probably due to the sheer weight of the individual slates. What is happening at St Mary’s this Autumn? St Mary’s is undergoing urgent roof repairs due to slipping slates and failing fixings. Scaffolding will be erected around St Mary’s in late October for essential roof repairs. Repairs are expected to last about a month. The repairs involve removing slates, fitting new battens, re-laying slates, and adding insulation to enhance energy efficiency and reduce carbon footprint.
