Bible Book Club
Bible Book Club is back this coming Monday, 7pm at my house. Last time we decided we would look at the Lord’s Prayer, and so I have some suggested reading for you. This will jump around the Bible a little bit, but hopefully gives us insight into different lines of the prayer. If you read other passages which you think speak into the prayer too, then do please come armed with them for the rest of us to look at.
My suggestions are:
-
the prayer itself is found in Matthew and Luke. To get the context in Matthew, read all of chapters 5, 6, and 7, and in Luke read chapter 11:1-13. Notice the differences and have a think about whether these matter.
-
“Our Father in heaven…” – read Genesis 1:1-2:3 and Psalm 91
-
“Your kingdom come…” – read Revelation 21 and 22, and Isaiah 61
-
“Give us this day our daily bread” – read John 4:1-42, Luke 9:10-20 and Matthew 14:13-21
-
“Lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil” – read James 1:13-18, Psalm 71, Galatians 1:1-5 and John 3:16-21
This is a prayer we all know so well that sometimes we can forget to think about what it really means. So as you prepare, try to take the time to say the Lord’s Prayer really slowly, pausing at the end of each line to think about what that line is saying or asking for before moving on to the next one. This is something we might do all together on Monday too.
Looking forward to seeing you on Monday – happy reading!
